Now is hot season in Thailand, and this year it’s been especially brutal — part of a larger record-setting heat wave hitting China and India as well. Temperatures above 100 degrees day after day after day, and 90 degrees or higher from roughly 9 am to 9 pm. Step outside and the heat bears down on you so hard it feels like gravity has increased.
So my wife and I decided to head down to Phuket for a few days at the beach. As opposed to northeastern Thailand where we live, here the sea breeze and regular thundershowers keep a lid on the mercury. An excellent plan, I have to say, but it means I’ve been off the clock. We’re heading back tomorrow, though, and I’ll be ready with a new essay next week.
I enjoyed hearing about this. And yes, rest! Most opinion writers are writing too much too fast and are not taking time to recover, contemplate, and remember. (I have just started two weeks off. If I did not have four little kids I would be on a beach somewhere also. Alas! I am finding time to recover and pray and I’ve done some of my own writing on state politics.)
Phuket is lovely. I returned recently from a couple of weeks on the Krabi area beaches. Heavenly.
Stay cool!
